WITA Academy’s Pathways Program connects students directly with trade professionals across government, industry, and law. Through public sector sessions, private sector sessions, and hands-on skills training, students gain firsthand insight into the paths available in international trade, building the network and knowledge to launch their careers.

Pathways Program – Fashion Institute of Technology

Held virtually on May 5, 2025, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology, introducing students to careers in international trade, textiles, fashion, and apparel. The program covered both public and private sector career paths, with sessions on government affairs, customs and compliance, merchandising, planning, design, sourcing, supply chain management, and logistics.

Speakers included professionals from Gap Inc., American Eagle Outfitters, VF Corporation, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, among others. The event concluded with a career tips session with a Gap Inc. recruiter and was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Programs – University of Denver/Tufts

Held virtually on April 15, 2025, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, Tufts University, and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). The session introduced graduate and undergraduate students to careers in international affairs, business, technology, AI, and trade, covering both public and private sector pathways.

Speakers included professionals from Mastercard, the United States Council for International Business, and the Information Technology Industry Council, sharing insights on careers spanning government relations, digital trade policy, and market access. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Careers in International Trade & Law Series – Spring Session at University of Georgia School of Law

Held virtually on March 17, 2025, this free session was hosted in partnership with the University of Georgia School of Law and was open to J.D., pre-law, and LL.M. students from all universities. The program offered career pathways insights focused on international trade law, covering both public and private sector roles available in Washington, D.C. and around the world.

Speakers included professionals from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and Amazon, sharing expertise on areas including export controls, sanctions, customs, and supply chain law. The session was moderated by a faculty co-director of the Dean Rusk International Law Center at UGA School of Law.

Pathways Program – University of Delaware/JCPenney

Held virtually on March 4, 2025, this free event was hosted in partnership with the University of Delaware and featured professionals from JCPenney across a range of functions. The session introduced students to careers in international trade, textiles, fashion, and apparel, with a “Day in the Life” format covering merchandising, planning, design, raw materials, sourcing, supply chain, government affairs, and trade compliance.

Speakers included JCPenney leaders from departments spanning global sourcing, product development, trade compliance, and government relations, offering students a comprehensive look at career opportunities across the retail and fashion supply chain. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Held virtually on February 19, 2025, this free event was hosted in partnership with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Yeutter Institute of International Trade and Finance. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, agriculture, and trade, featuring a fireside chat with a former Chief Agricultural Negotiator at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, followed by panels covering both public and private sector career paths.

Speakers included professionals from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, Holland & Knight, and the National Milk Producers Federation. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – University of Kansas

Held virtually on November 14, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with the University of Kansas, including its Center for East Asian Studies, Department of Political Science, Business School, Law School, and Center for Global and International Studies. The session introduced students to careers in trade, technology, and the digital economy, featuring panel discussions on navigating roles in government and the private sector.

Speakers included professionals from the U.S. Mission to the World Trade Organization, the Semiconductor Industry Association, Panasonic North America, and Microsoft, including a one-on-one leadership conversation with the former Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

College of Arts & Sciences Leadership Lunch & Learn 2024 – Howard University Pathways Program – University of Kansas

Held in-person on October 22, 2024, at Frederick Douglass Hall on Howard University’s campus, this free lunch and learn introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade across both public and private sector pathways. Lunch was provided, and students had the opportunity to engage directly with senior trade and policy professionals.

Featured speakers included the Corporate Vice President of U.S. Government Affairs at Microsoft and the Chief of Staff at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, who shared insights on their career journeys and the range of opportunities available in the trade policy community. The event included a dedicated student Q&A session.

Pathways Program – University of Denver/APSIA

Held virtually on October 9, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), open to undergraduate and graduate students. The session featured a fireside conversation with a former Executive Vice President at UPS, followed by a panel on career opportunities across the public and private sectors.

Speakers included professionals from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Silverado Policy Accelerator, and the Semiconductor Industry Association. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – Florida International University

Held virtually on October 5, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with Florida International University and introduced students to careers in international trade, supply chains, and logistics. The session featured separate panels covering public and private sector opportunities, with closing remarks from an FIU faculty member and a WITA Academy Fellow who is an FIU alumnus.

Speakers included professionals from U.S. Customs & Border Protection, the U.S. Department of Transportation, UPS, and Imperial Freight Brokers, offering students a comprehensive look at career pathways across government agencies and the private sector. The event was free and open to all FIU students using a university email to register.

Careers in International Trade & Law Series – Fall Session at Howard School of Law

Held in-person on September 16, 2024, at Howard University School of Law, this free event was curated for J.D., pre-law, and LL.M. students and was also live streamed for students at universities outside the DC area. The session featured separate panels on public and private sector career opportunities in international trade law, with lunch provided and a networking social to follow.

Speakers included professionals from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the House Committee on Ways and Means, Wiley Rein LLP, and Amazon Web Services, moderated by the Senior Vice President of Global Public Affairs at UPS. The event was free and open to all students.

Pathways Program – Howard University

Held virtually on May 21, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Howard University College of Arts and Sciences Flagship Student Ambassador Program, open to undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade through separate panels on public and private sector opportunities.

Speakers included professionals from the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, EcoLab, and the Corn Refiners Association, moderated by a Partner at Wiley Rein LLP. The event was free and open to all Howard University College of Arts and Sciences students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – University of Delaware

Held virtually on April 30, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with the University of Delaware and open to students from the University of Delaware, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Fashion Scholarship Fund member schools. The session introduced students to careers in international trade, textiles, fashion, and apparel, with separate panels covering public and private sector opportunities.

Speakers included professionals from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, PVH Corp., Gap Inc., and Walmart, moderated by faculty from the University of Delaware’s Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – University of Denver/APSIA

Held virtually on April 17, 2024, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), open to undergraduate and graduate students. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade, with dedicated panels on opportunities at the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the private sector.

Speakers included professionals from the International Trade Administration, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the Foreign Agricultural Service, UPS, and International Paper. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Launch of the WITA Academy’s Careers in International Trade & Law Series – Spring Session at Georgetown Law

Held in-person and virtually on April 10, 2024, at Georgetown University Law Center, this free event marked the inaugural session of the WITA Academy’s Careers in International Trade & Law Series, curated for J.D., pre-law, and LL.M. students. The program featured separate panels on public and private sector career opportunities in international trade law, followed by a networking social with food and drinks provided.

Speakers included professionals from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Hogan Lovells, Pfizer, and UPS, moderated by partners from Kyle House Group and Mayer Brown with extensive backgrounds in U.S. trade policy. The event was co-hosted with Georgetown Law’s Center on Inclusive Trade and Development and was also live streamed for students outside the DC area.

Husker Trade Talk – Careers in International Affairs, Business & Trade

Held virtually on December 1, 2023, this free two-hour event was part of the Husker Trade Talk Series and open to students from Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and neighboring states, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Kansas, and University of Denver. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade through panels covering private sector government affairs, U.S. public sector opportunities, and a dedicated skills training session in partnership with Women in International Trade (WIIT).

Speakers included professionals from the National Milk Producers Federation, the Silverado Policy Accelerator, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. House of Representatives, International Paper, John Deere, and The Dow Chemical Company. The event was free and open to all students using a university email to register.

Pathways Program – Fashion Institute of Technology (2023)

Held virtually on October 9, 2023, this free three-hour event was hosted in partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology and open exclusively to FIT students and faculty. The session introduced students to careers in international trade, fashion, and apparel through two dedicated sessions covering public and private sector opportunities. Students who attended at least 50% of the program received a free one-year WITA membership and a certificate of achievement.

Speakers included professionals from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the International Trade Administration, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Fair Labor Association, the U.S. Fashion Industry Association, and Levi Strauss & Co. The event was welcomed by the WITA Board President and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

College of Arts & Sciences Leadership Lunch and Learn 2023 – Howard University

Held in-person on August 14, 2023, as part of Bison Week at Howard University, this lunch and learn introduced new students to WITA and the international trade community during their New Student Orientation. The session provided an accessible introduction to careers in trade policy and the opportunities available through the WITA Academy.

Held virtually on June 14, 2023, this free event was hosted in partnership with the Howard University College of Arts and Sciences Flagship Student Ambassador Program, open exclusively to Howard University College of Arts and Sciences students. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade through conversations with senior trade and policy professionals.

Speakers included professionals from EcoLab, UPS, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Invariant, and the House Committee on Ways and Means, offering students a wide-ranging view of career opportunities across the public and private sectors. The event was free and open to all Howard University College of Arts and Sciences students using a university email to register.

Husker Trade Talk – Careers in International Affairs, Business & Trade (2022)

Held virtually on December 2, 2022, this free event was open to students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska Omaha, and University of Nebraska at Kearney. The session introduced students to careers in international affairs, business, and trade through panels covering opportunities at the International Trade Administration, the U.S. International Trade Commission, international organizations and NGOs, and corporate government affairs roles.

Speakers included professionals from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. International Trade Commission, Microsoft, Cargill, Reckitt Benckiser, and Georgetown Law, with a dedicated skills training session for the U.S. private sector featuring attorneys from FedEx, Kelley Drye, and Holland & Knight. Students who participated received a guide to navigating career paths in international affairs, business, and trade along with resources for internships and entry-level positions.
