CHINA’S NEW HONG KONG SQUEEZE HIKES TENSIONS: Beijing is seeking to impose new controls on “seditious” activities in Hong Kong to crack down on political dissent in the territory and further erode its autonomy from the mainland.
U.S. senators have responded by introducing a bipartisan bill that would impose sanctions on officials who carry out the new security law and on banks that conduct business with those officials.
The Senate recently passed a bill cracking down on Chinese companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges and another condemning human rights abuses of Uighur Muslims and other ethnic minorities. But China hawks say these measures were carefully written so the U.S. could avoid taking any immediate action.
