The chairman of the Government’s newly strengthened Trade and Agriculture Commission has ruled out a potential compromise with Washington on chlorinated chicken, even if it makes reaching a US trade deal impossible.
Tim Smith, the former Tesco executive, hit back at suggestions of a so-called dual tariff regime that would retain high duties on cheaply produced US produce while cutting import costs for quality fare such as organic food.
His intervention comes amid fears that a trade deal will be impossible unless it includes access for farmers who have a powerful sway over the US Senate, which must approve any deal.
