With the impact of the coronavirus still roiling global trade, May was a bad month at the ports of Georgia, although U.S. exports picked up some of the slack, officials said Monday.
The number of containers handled by the ports of Savannah and Brunswick was down 9.7% last month compared with May 2019, said Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority.
With some trade in decline and some overseas production down, more than one of every five ship sailings originally scheduled for Georgia was canceled. However, companies that were shipping goods were packing containers on the ships that did sail.
